Partitions
For this assignment we need to install both Windows and Linux onto the same computer both on a different partition…only none of us in the group (Me, Kat, Claudia and Ollie) have ever done this before.
As I have a very busy schedule we could only fit it in this morning, and it wasn’t until we went to book the room that we found out it takes a long time to do, and people who have started at 1 hadn’t finishe by 5…we only have 3 hours as we had Mike’s Lecture that he told us all to be in…this brought problems.
The first thing we had to do was delete all existing partitions (as previous people have done the same assignment and had successfully installed both) only we didn’t know how to delete the parathion’s…when we managed to get rid of the non-Dos partitions (so Windows and Linux) we got worried a bit when the computer said there was no partitions left…we thought we had done something wrong.
Everyone got a bit confused when extra partitions needed to be added (as a primary, extended with sub-paritions (had a name but can’t remember it) as this was to be used for Linux) but that was done succesfully.
Installing Windows XP wasn’t too hard to do, it was self-explanatory, we set all our accounts up added passwords (the hard way lol) and put everyone in groups, and stopped a user from having control on a directory and only being able to read it etc.
The harder part was when installing Linux, we really did have to follow the sheet for that. Again most of it was self-explanatory but as none of us work on this OS we had to concentrate on what was being done more, and had to double check it was all working ok. We did however install the wrong version of it. we slected Gnome instead of KDE (we didn’t know which one to do, and it wasn’t until we had done that did we find out it was supposed tobe KDE but we had selected Gnome(we hadn’t read the instructions all the way through we were doing them step by step))
With the mistake it made it more difficult to completele the excersises and screenshots (were using the camera on my phone for that) to complete, as the instructions were for the KDE version and not the Gnome…so we were left on our own to navigate around Linux to complete them.
Unfourtantly we weren’t able to finish the questions or get the correct screenshots as we ran out of time…so we had to restart the computer and leave the room to go to Mike lecture.
This leaves us with a little dilemea, do we go back and do the whole thing again (only install linux if thats possible) or do we hand in what we have so far and hope that’s the still enough to get a decent grade…this will have to be discussed as a group afterall all our marks depend on it.
