University
Right where to begin…well I suppose the best place is to introduce myself.I am Vicky Hill, and am currently studying at The Univeristy of Plymouth, doing a BSc Honours degree in Digital Arts and Technology. It’s a 3 year course with a year placement which is optional, this will be done between the 2nd and 3rd year.
I am planning on doing a placement year as it’ll mean I’ll gain experience and be able to prove to both myself and future employers that I can do the work I’m training to do at University. Also it’ll show that I can use what I’ve learnt in real lift situations in the workplace rather than just being able to do it for a specific assignment, where we would of course only use the skills we’ve learnt during the lectures and practical sessions. This years experience will be worth more than a piece of paper that says I can do the work.
For my placement year I would love to work in
New York or
Washington DC and working in a T.V Company there or some other media company there. After University I would like to move over to
America especially
New York as I really like the feel of the place. When I first applied for uni, the Digital Arts and Technology course wasn’t one of my options, this was not because I didn’t want to do it.
What happened was, when I had started looking into courses to do at Uni, one that really interested me was MediaLab Arts, only when I went to apply and select that course it wasn’t there. It wasn’t even on the Plymouth Website as a course that could be done.
Where it had been though another course was, this was Multimedia Production and Technology, while reading through the details of this course I realised this was very similar to MediaLab Arts and so I applied to that course.
I was accepted and started university the following September (2006).
In the first few weeks at Uni I found out that MPT (Multimedia Production and Technology) wasn’t what I expected or what I wanted to do as it involved more the ‘hardware’ side of computing rather than the multimedia side of things (which is what I wanted to concentrate).
So I transferred to Digital Arts and Technology (DAT) as MPT shared a few modules with that course and it seemed to be more of what I wanted to do (more working with multimedia such as Photoshop, video editing etc.) it wasn’t until I had begun did I find out that DAT had been MediaLab Arts but this year they had changed its name. So I ended up being on the course I had originally wanted to do.

Fancy working in Media in London for placment? New York is isn’t, but it’s still a good crack. I’m 3rd year DAT and recruiting my replacement for Siren World Wide Ltd.
Send a CV and covering letter to ayates@siren.tv if you’re interested!
Cheers,
Aaron
